Legend has it that King Solomon was given possession of a lapis lazuli ring by an angel. This ring allowed him to control an army of demons, which he used to build his temple. In ancient Rome, lapis lazuli was believed to be a powerful aphrodisiac. It represented love, peace and joy. It was ground into a powder and mixed with liquids to use as a compress to relieve negative emotions, draw out spiritual impurities, and energize the throat chakra. In many cultures lapis lazuli gems symbolized royalty and great wealth. Lapis lazuli was also the most used material for amulets. The image of Truth was always inscribed on the lapis lazuli, which was worn around the neck of the Egyptian High Priest. Despite the differences between ancient cultures, they all held lapis lazuli in high regard and generally accorded it the same designation as a powerful and spiritual object.
