Filigree is artwork made up of intricate metalwork that is twisted and treaded then soldered together to form beautiful shapes. The craft originated in ancient Mesopotamia around 3,000 BC and was advanced to higher perfection by the ancient Italy people. Filigree art was also popularized and perfected in India, Iran and other parts of central Asian, perhaps because the Greek settled on that continent or because they were trained in the art form.
The techniques were then brought to Mexico after the Spanish conquest. The Spanish learned the technique from the Moors, who occupied Spain for some time. ‘Aretes de Filigrana’ are a staple in Mexican culture and most popular in the states of Oaxaca and Yucatan where artisans are currently facing pressure from overseas mass manufacturers like China. There is a need to acknowledge the importance and value of this artwork to pressure this artwork.
