Liebre Leather Card Holder

The Aztec legend tells that many years ago, the god Quetzalcóatl, who had the form of a giant snake, decided to travel the Universe under the guise of a man. He set on this journey at a very slow pace so he could take in all his surroundings. He walked all day until, at dusk, he thought about taking shelter in a cave. Very pleased with the first day of his travels, he sat on a rock at the entrance of the cave, so he could better appreciate the heavens and the night air. Delighted, he thought that he had never seen such a beautiful moon, as it cast a bright glow on everything in sight.

Quetzalcóatl was so mesmerized, that he didn’t notice a hare with long ears that was sitting next to him, watching him while he gnawed on a little bamboo twig. The god, surprised, asked the hare what he was chewing on so avidly. The hare explained that he was not eating, but rather sharpening his teeth, because he needed his incisors to be sharp to tear on flesh while feeding. The god agreed with the little animal, and told him he hadn’t had anything to eat, since he had been busy walking and observing all day long. The hare moved in to take a closer look at him and could see that the man was indeed hungry. He looked at the man kindly, and in a moment of selfless-ness, offered himself as nourishment. The god was so touched by the hare’s generosity, willing to die so he himself could survive, that he stood up from the rock, took the hare in his hands, pointed it to the moon, and began blowing. The hare’s image was then imprinted on the moon. The god put the animal down and said, “Humans will die and be born again, but your depiction will forever remain on the face of the moon, and your kindness will never be forgotten”. The oath still stands true to this day. If you look carefully, you can see the shape of the hare that offered his life to save the god Quetzalcóatl.

Materials: The leather used in this collection are treated with 100% vegetable materials. This means that different natural products are used in its tanning process instead of using chemicals that are harmful to the environment. These natural products are usually branches of trees and plants, such as chestnut and tara, sticks, roots and nuts, which are powdered and used to tan leather. The anilines used to color your bag, like the waxes that create the two-tone effect, are of plant origin. For this reason, any irregularity that is noticed in the skin is the effect of the natural process. As a suggestion, do not expose your bag to the sun for a long time as some oxidation could be noticed in the color, as happens with fruit.

Care: Carlota pieces are made with high-quality materials, and therefore should be treated with care, and protected against the elements. Due to the delicate nature of the materials, daily use can cause scratches and scuff marks on the surface, so we recommend you treat it with care. The leather is submitted to an important natural dye process, and the suede lining is pigmented with natural anilines, so we recommend that you be careful with any light-colored items that may come into contact with it.

If soiled, carefully clean the surface area using water and soft detergents. To keep your leather products in optimum condition, clean with a soft dry cloth, or, if necessary have them professionally cleaned.

Each of the designs are inspired by a specific and representative element of our culture. Through this piece of fine craftsmanship, the Crabtree family acknowledges and honors Grandmother Carlota for instilling in her descendants the love for their homeland, exalting it through art and beauty. We hope you enjoy this piece that symbolizes the wonders of Mexico!

At the moment, Carlota works with twenty artisans from Guadalajara Jalisco. They make the bags by hand from the tanning of the leather to the making, following an artisanal process. The artisans have more than twenty years of experience in the leather industry.
