Yes. This is the part that surprises most people.
A lab grown diamond and a natural diamond are chemically and physically identical. Both are pure carbon arranged in the same crystal lattice. Both rate a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, the highest there is, which is why both can be worn every day for fifty years and still look like themselves. Both refract light the same way, producing the same brilliance, the same fire, the same flash across a room.
To the naked eye, they are indistinguishable. Even a trained jeweler needs specialized equipment to tell them apart.
This is worth stating plainly, because the language in the jewelry industry is often designed to blur it. A lab grown diamond is not a diamond simulant. Moissanite is a simulant. Cubic zirconia is a simulant. Those are different materials that resemble diamond. A lab grown diamond is a diamond, and both the Federal Trade Commission and the major grading laboratories treat it as one.
Natural diamonds formed between one and three billion years ago, roughly one hundred miles below the surface of the earth, under heat and pressure that are difficult to picture in any meaningful way. Carbon atoms crystallized under those conditions and stayed there until volcanic activity carried them upward through kimberlite pipes.
Every natural diamond is older than the continent you are standing on. For many people, that is the entire appeal, and it is not a small thing. The stone existed long before the two of you did and will continue long after.
Lab grown diamonds are created in controlled environments over a matter of weeks, using one of two methods. Both start with a thin slice of diamond called a seed.
HPHT recreates the conditions that formed diamonds underground. The diamond seed is placed in pure carbon and subjected to pressures around 1.5 million pounds per square inch and temperatures above 1,300 degrees Celsius. The carbon melts and crystallizes around the seed, growing outward in every direction.
CVD takes a different route. The seed sits in a sealed chamber filled with carbon-rich gas, usually methane. The gas is heated into plasma, breaking the molecular bonds and releasing carbon atoms that settle onto the seed layer by layer. The crystal grows upward rather than outward.
Neither method produces a lesser diamond. They produce diamonds on a different timeline, and each tends toward slightly different characteristics that a grading report will capture.

At a fixed budget, choosing lab grown generally opens one of these doors:
A larger carat weight. The most common reason people choose lab grown. The stone you pictured becomes the stone you can actually buy.
A higher clarity or color grade. Instead of a larger stone, a cleaner and whiter one at the size you already wanted.
A more detailed setting. More handwork in the band, more of the design you fell in love with, a stone that sits in something worth looking at on its own.
Spending less than you planned. A legitimate outcome that almost nobody in this industry says out loud. If the ring costs less and you put the difference toward the wedding, a down payment, or nothing at all, that is not a compromise. That is a decision.
Natural diamonds carry a different kind of value. Supply is finite and the secondary market reflects that. If resale value or heirloom intent factors into how you are thinking, it belongs in the conversation honestly. The lab grown resale market is still young and prices have moved as production has scaled.
Because lab grown diamonds form in controlled conditions, they often contain fewer inclusions and grade higher on clarity. Many of the variables that create flaws in nature simply are not present.
They also make fancy colors accessible in a way nature does not. Pinks, blues, and vivid yellows are extraordinarily rare in natural diamonds and priced to match. In a lab, those colors can be produced intentionally, which puts a colored center stone within reach of an ordinary budget for the first time.
Both types are graded on the same four Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Both can be certified by independent laboratories including GIA and IGI. Lab grown diamonds are clearly identified as lab grown on their certification and are typically laser-inscribed with an identifying number, readable under magnification.
There is no ambiguity about what you are buying, in either direction. If a seller is vague about origin, that is information about the seller, not about the stone.
Lab grown diamonds carry a smaller environmental footprint and sidestep the conflict sourcing concerns associated with parts of the mined diamond trade entirely. For many people, that settles the question before price ever comes up.

Not every natural diamond is unethical. Responsible sourcing in the natural market exists, and it is verifiable. At the same time, lab grown production is energy-intensive, and the footprint depends heavily on how that energy is generated. "Sustainable" is a word worth asking questions about no matter which side is using it.
