About the Collection

The jaguar, renowned as the largest feline in the Americas and the third largest globally, held significant reverence in numerous Pre-Hispanic societies. Among the Mexica, Mayan, and Olmec cultures, depictions of individuals adorned with feline characteristics were common. Esteemed by rulers, warriors, and priests alike, the jaguar symbolized unique aspects of nature, particularly the dichotomy of night and day. It was believed to possess a pivotal role in creation myths, with kings and nobles often viewed as descendants of this majestic creature.

In Mayan culture, the jaguar assumed a central position as a symbol, prominently featured in their artistic expressions. Ek Balam, an archaeological site in the Yucatán, bears testament to this reverence with its name translating to "black jaguar." Historically, indigenous communities revered the jaguar not only for its physical prowess but also for its perceived spiritual connections and supernatural powers. Rituals and ceremonies often incorporated jaguar motifs, reflecting a deep-seated cultural reverence for this magnificent animal.

Despite its cultural and ecological importance, the jaguar faces numerous threats to its survival in the modern world. Inhabiting the lush tropical jungles of South-West Mexico, near the borders of Belize and Guatemala, the jaguar faces an uncertain future due to habitat loss. It now finds itself listed among endangered species, underscoring the urgent need for conservation efforts. Habitat fragmentation, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict continue to endanger jaguar populations across their range. By recognizing the multifaceted significance of the jaguar and taking concerted action to safeguard its future, we can ensure that this majestic feline continues to roam the forests of the Americas for generations to come.

CARLOTA was founded by brother and sister, Gerardo and Daniela. Their story begins with their grandmother, Carlota Camacho Hall—a recognized painter in the 1800s whose artistic spirit now lives on in the heart of their brand. Carlota's passion for art and her deep connection to the vibrant culture of Mexico became the guiding light for CARLOTA. As descendants, Daniela and Gerardo carry forward her legacy not only in name but in the craftsmanship that defines each of their leather bags.

CARLOTA weaves the threads of family heritage, artistic inspiration, and Mexican tradition into every stitch of their finely crafted leather bags. Their designs are a canvas with the colors and patterns of Mexico's rich tapestry. The landscapes, traditions, and folklore inspire every detail of their leather bags.

As you explore their collection, you're not just purchasing a bag; you're becoming a part of the Carlota journey. Every piece is not just an accessory but a work of art. Join us in celebrating family, art, and the cultural richness of Mexico with each carefully crafted leather creation.
