Description
Created from the original oil painting, this limited-time print is offered in partnership with Periko the Artist. This piece was conceived in 2020, during a period when the U.S. Supreme Court was ruling on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Informed by the artist’s personal experience and the longstanding challenges of immigration reform in the United States, Girl with Butterfly reflects on the narrative of “Dreamers,” who are often portrayed as children. While many entered the country at a young age, the broader realities of immigration policy and reform extend across generations.

One hundred percent of the profits from the purchase of this print will be donated and equally distributed to two nonprofit organizations: ImmSchools, based in Texas, and the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, based in Washington State.

ImmSchools mission is to support the needs of K-12 immigrant students, their families, and educators through professional development programming and quarterly workshops. The workshops focus on immigration and education advocacy, post-secondary pathways, family preparedness, mental health, and multilingual support, all aimed at supporting children’s social and academic development. In addition to Texas, ImmSchools serves schools in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Northwest Immigrant Rights Project  (NWIRP) advances immigrant rights and social justice by providing direct legal services to low-income immigrants and refugees. Their work includes deportation defense, asylum representation, support for detained individuals, family reunification, and protection for survivors of violence. In addition to legal services, NWIRP engages in systemic advocacy and community education to challenge unjust policies and ensure immigrants can live with safety, dignity, and stability.

About the Artist

Gerardo Peña, better known as Periko the Artist, was born in Queretaro, Mexico, but his family moved when he was a young child to the state of Washington. He was raised up and down the Puget Sound and currently lives near Seattle, WA. With a background in business management, and with the current political climate, as a DACA recipient who recently received his green card, Gerardo felt that it was now or never the time to focus his energy as an artist.

Typically a surreal painter, Gerardo expanded into the public arts and multimedia world. His art is an introspection of his journey into self-identity and an emotional response of the world around him. Many times touching subjects of mental health and the immigrant experience.
